The Early Childhood Assistant certificate program prepares graduates to work with children* aged 0-12 years and their families* in early years and child care* settings including centrebased and home-based care and child and family* programs. 

As members of the early learning team, graduates work collaboratively and communicate effectively with colleagues, early childhood educators, supervisors and other professionals and
children’s* service partners to support and maintain quality early
learning environments*.

Early childhood educators plan, organize and implement ,programs for children between the ages of infancy and 12 years. Early childhood educator assistants provide care for infants and
preschool- to school-age children under the guidance of early childhood educators. Early childhood educators and assistants lead children in activities to stimulate and develop their intellectual, physical and emotional growth and ensure their security and well-being. They are employed in child-care centres, day-care centres, kindergartens, agencies for exceptional children and other settings where early childhood education services are provided. Supervisors of early childhood educators and assistants are included in this unit group.

The Early Childhood Assistant program is designed to train individuals to support early childhood educators in caring for and educating young children. The role of an ECA is multifaceted and includes:

  • Assisting with planning and implementing developmentally appropriate activities.
  • Supporting children’s emotional, social, cognitive, and physical development.
  • Ensuring a safe, healthy, and stimulating environment.
  • Communicating effectively with parents and guardians about their children’s progress.
  • Assisting with daily routines such as meals, naps, and personal hygiene.

ECAs work in various settings, Including daycare centers, preschools, and private homes, playing a crucial role in the early stages of child development.

Main responsibilities

Early childhood educators perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Develop and implement daily activities that support and promote the development of children.
  • Lead children in activities by telling or reading stories, teaching songs, demonstrating the use of simple musical instruments, preparing craft materials and demonstrating their use, providing opportunities for creative expression through the media of art, dramatic play, music and physical fitness, and taking the children to local points of interest.
  • Guide and assist children in the development of proper eating, dressing and toilet habits.
  • Observe children for signs of learning disabilities or emotional problems and take appropriate action.
  • Assess the skills, abilities, interests and needs of children.
  • Discuss progress or problems of children with parents and other staff members.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with other community service providers working with children.
  • Attend meetings and workshops to develop and discuss new teaching methods.
  • May plan and organize activities for school-age children in child-care programs before and after regular school hours.
  • May supervise and co-ordinate the activities of other early childhood educators and early childhood educator assistants.

Early childhood educator assistants perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Conduct and monitor activity programs designed for young children.
  • Lead children in activities by telling stories, teaching songs and preparing craft materials.
  • Prepare and serve snacks.
  • Arrange rooms and furniture for lunch and rest periods.
  • Assist with proper eating, dressing and toilet habits.
  • Submit written observations on children to supervisor.
  • Attend staff meetings to discuss progress and problems of children.
  • Assist supervisor in keeping records.
  • Maintain day-care equipment and assist in housekeeping duties.

Graduation Criteria

  • Minimum mark of 70% in each module with no evaluation method below 60%
  • Minimum mark of 70% with no critical deficiencies in each of the skills Performance Demonstrations
  • students who achieve an average of 90% or more will have an Honours designation on their diploma.
  • Current Standard First Aid and Basic Rescuer (Level C) CPR Certification
  • Demonstrate a satisfactory attendance record by completion of the ECA Attendance
  • Medical Report within 45 days of start of program stating that student is capable to complete all components of practicum portion of the program
  • and has up-to-date immunization status 
  • Clear Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector within 45 days of commencement of study.

Employment requirements

Early childhood educators:

  • A bachelor’s degree or college diploma in early childhood education is required.
  • Progression to senior positions, such as day-care supervisor, is possible with experience.

Early childhood educator assistants:

  • Completion of secondary school is usually required.
  • Experience in child care, such as babysitting, is required.

Students who come to our Private Career College and can prove through transcript that they have previous academic history of this specific program will be granted advanced standing for 25%. The list of programs must match or advanced standing will not be granted.
