Personal Support Worker you provide daily care to individuals who need assistance as they deal with the effects of aging, injury, or illness. You work alongside and under the direction of a Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse.

A Personal Support Worker (PSW) course in Ontario equips individuals with the skills and knowledge to provide care and support to clients in various settings, such as long-term care, retirement homes, and private residences. These programs typically involve classroom learning, hands-on lab sessions, and clinical placements to ensure practical application of learned skills.

A Personal Support Worker (PSW) course typically covers foundational knowledge, safety and mobility, body systems, personal hygiene, abuse and neglect, household management, and care planning.

Additionally, it includes practical components like clinical placements and simulations to prepare students for real-world scenarios.

Main responsibilities

Perosnal Support Worker  perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Long-term care facilities
  • Home care services giving care to clients living in their own homes in the community
  • Group Homes
  • HospitalsAdult day programs
  • Educational facilities

Graduation Criteria

  • Minimum mark of 75% in each module with no evaluation method below 75%
  • Minimum mark of 60% with no critical deficiencies in each of the skills Performance Demonstrations
  • Current Standard First Aid and Basic Rescuer (Level C) CPR Certification
  • Demonstrate a satisfactory attendance record by completion of the PSW Attendance
  • Medical Report within 45 days of start of program stating that student is capable to complete all components of practicum portion of the program and has up-to-date immunization status

Students who achieve an average of 90% or more will have an Honours designation on their diploma.

Progression to supervisory positions is possible with experience.
