A new school year can also be the right moment to rethink where your own career is heading.

Every October, families across the GTA return to routines built around school, schedules and new beginnings. For adults, it can also be a useful reminder that learning does not have an expiry date. If you have spent the year struggling to find stable employment, working in a job with little room to grow or watching your industry change around you, waiting until January to think about your future is not necessary. September can be an excellent time to review where you are professionally and decide what needs to be different by this time next year. A career reset does not have to mean abandoning everything you have done. Often it means taking your existing experience and adding skills that make it relevant to a different opportunity.

Adult learners tend to approach education differently because the stakes are clearer. You may already know that you enjoy working with people, numbers, technology, children or organized office environments. You may also know what you do not want after years in the workforce. That self-knowledge can help narrow the options. Instead of choosing a program because it sounds popular, work backwards from occupations that interest you. Look at GTA job postings, compare qualifications and salaries, consider the commute and schedule, and ask whether you can imagine doing the work every day. Career-focused training in fields such as medical office administration, accounting and payroll, banking, property administration, business or health care support can then become part of a specific employment plan rather than education for its own sake.

Cost is naturally part of that decision. Depending on your circumstances, Better Jobs Ontario may provide financial support for eligible career training, while other students may use different funding options. The important thing is to get accurate information before assuming you either qualify or do not qualify. ABC Access Business College works with adults considering new careers and offers vocational diploma programs across several employment fields.
